What Is ResurFace™?
ResurFace™ is an ablative treatment that is a type of micro peel or micro laser peel, which means it removes tissue rather than heating it from underneath. That distinction matters. Ablative resurfacing generally produces more visible change in photodamaged skin than non-ablative treatments, which is why it's used for concerns that gentler lasers only soften.
It's used for:
- Fine lines and wrinkles, including crepey texture around the eyes and mouth
- Atrophic acne scarring (the depressed, pitted kind)
- Surgical and traumatic scars
- Rough, uneven skin texture and enlarged-looking pores
- Sun damage, age spots and mottled pigmentation
- Dull skin that no longer reflects light evenly

How ResurFace™ Works
ResurFace™ works by delivering a laser that doesn't treat the whole surface. The laser beam splits into a grid of microscopic columns, each one vaporizing a narrow channel of damaged skin surrounded by a thin zone of coagulated tissue. Between those columns, your skin is left completely intact.
That untouched skin is the whole point. It acts as a reservoir of healthy cells that migrate into the treated channels, so the outer layer rebuilds in days rather than weeks. Fully ablative resurfacing, which removes the entire surface, forces the skin to rebuild from deeper structures like hair follicles and sweat glands, and recovery stretches accordingly.
Underneath, the controlled injury sets off a repair cascade. Growth factors and enzymes clear damaged collagen, fibroblasts lay down new collagen, and the dermal matrix reorganizes. Epidermal repair happens within the first few days. Collagen remodelling continues for months, which is why your skin at week twelve looks different from your skin at week two.
Because each session treats only a fraction of the surface, results build across a series. ResurFace™ reports long-lasting results within one to three sessions.
The Medical Evidence
The technology used for this treatment has been studied in randomized trials for more than a decade. Here's what that research actually shows, including its limits.
Acne scarring. In a split-face trial published in Lasers in Medical Science (2022), 27 people with moderate to severe atrophic acne scarring received three sessions of fractional Er:YAG at four to six week intervals. Scarring scores on the Goodman and Baron scale improved by 35.27%. A separate randomized split-face study in Frontiers in Medicine (2023) ran four sessions of ablative fractional 2940 nm Er:YAG in 31 people and recorded a 43.73% average reduction on the ECCA acne scar grading scale, with 74% of treated sides rated grade 3 or higher for improvement by investigators.
Wrinkles. A randomized, double-blind, split-face trial published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (2010) treated the peri-orbital area of 28 patients with a single session of fractional Er:YAG on one side and fractional CO2 on the other. Measured wrinkle depth dropped roughly 20% and Fitzpatrick wrinkle scores roughly 10% at three months.
Overall efficacy and safety. A systematic review in Lasers in Medical Science (2020) pooled 17 randomized clinical trials covering 453 patients treated with fractional erbium lasers for rejuvenation, pigmentation and atrophic acne scars. It found these lasers effective in the short term with minimal adverse effects, most commonly redness and swelling lasting 24 hours to 7 days.
Why This Technology Is Different From Other Resurfacing Devices
Most resurfacing conversations come down to two lasers: CO2 at 10,600 nm and Er:YAG at 2940 nm. They're both ablative. They behave very differently.
The wavelength is absorbed faster and shallower.
Water is the target for both lasers, but Er:YAG energy is absorbed by water 12 to 18 times more strongly than CO2 energy. The result is precise removal of surface tissue with less heat left behind in the layers below.
Recovery is shorter.
Published guidance on ablative resurfacing recommends one to three days off work after fractional Er:YAG treatment, compared with four to ten days after fractional CO2. It's also more comfortable, with less lingering redness based on a 2024 meta-analysis of eight studies.
It's the preferred ablative option when pigment risk is a concern.
For skin at higher risk of pigment change and scarring, published guidance favours Er:YAG over CO2. SharpLight lists its Er:YAG fractional platforms for Fitzpatrick skin types 1 to 5, and your skin type is assessed before anything is booked.
Depth is adjustable, session by session.
Energy, depth and coverage are set by the operator, so a light textural pass and a deeper scar-focused treatment come from the same handpiece. SharpLight's Er:YAG 2940 fractional laser handpieces appear under the company's active medical device licences with Health Canada.
Aftercare + Results
Safety is paramount and we focus on preventing complications through precise techniques and follow-up care.
We will clean the area and may gently massage it for even product distribution. You'll receive a courtesy bag with items like an ice pack and anti-bruising products (such as Epicutis sachets or arnica) to support healing. You might experience mild bruising or swelling, which can be managed by following the post-treatment instructions we'll give you.
