Understanding Skin Tone and Texture at the Cellular Level
Skin tone irregularities stem from disruptions in melanin production (the pigment responsible for your skin's colour.) When melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin) become overactive due to UV exposure, inflammation, or hormonal fluctuations, they create hyperpigmentation in the form of sunspots, age spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory marks. This uneven distribution of melanin manifests as dark patches or discoloration that can make skin appear aged or tired.
Skin texture challenges involve changes to the skin's surface architecture. Smooth, healthy skin has an even dermal structure with well-organized collagen and elastin fibres. When these proteins break down due to aging or sun damage, or when cellular turnover slows, the result is roughness, enlarged pores, fine lines, and an uneven surface. Accumulated dead skin cells on the outer layer (stratum corneum) can further contribute to a dull, rough appearance.
