Often called the "truth-tellers" of age, our hands reveal the passage of time through visible changes that many traditional anti-aging routines overlook. While we diligently care for our faces with sunscreen and serums, our hands endure decades of sun exposure, harsh chemicals, and repetitive movements, resulting in distinct aging patterns that differ markedly from those on our faces. Hand skin aging involves both intrinsic biological processes and extrinsic environmental damage. Intrinsically, decreased hyaluronic acid production leads to moisture loss and reduced plumpness, while slower cell turnover creates a buildup of damaged surface cells. Extrinsically, UV radiation breaks down collagen fibres and creates oxidative stress, leading to premature aging and textural changes.
In a comprehensive study examining hyaluronic acid gel treatments for hand rejuvenation, researchers found that 87-96% of treated hands showed significant improvement in appearance and skin quality, based on both evaluator and patient-reported outcomes (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2020). These improvements included enhanced skin hydration, reduced fine lines, and improved overall texture.
Chemical peels specifically targeting hand discolouration and texture have also shown promising results. Superficial peels using glycolic or lactic acid remove damaged surface cells and stimulate collagen renewal, while deeper peels address more significant textural concerns and pigmentation issues.
Tendon Visibility: Restoring Natural Volume
One of the most aging aspects of hand appearance is the prominence of tendons and veins through thinning skin. This occurs as subcutaneous fat pads atrophy and the skin loses its supportive structure. Treatment approaches for discolouration focus on both removing existing pigmentation and preventing future damage. Laser treatments, particularly Q-switched lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL), target melanin deposits selectively while preserving surrounding tissue. Studies examining combination therapy approaches found that incorporating multiple modalities, such as fillers, lasers, chemical peels, and microneedling, significantly improves results for various facets of hand aging, including skin texture, pigmentation, and volume restoration (Dermatologic Surgery, 2023).
Topical treatments also play a crucial role in discolouration management. Prescription-strength hydroquinone, tretinoin, and newer agents, such as kojic acid and vitamin C, work to inhibit melanin production and accelerate cell turnover, gradually lightening existing spots while preventing new ones.
