Enlarged Pores

Pores are small holes in your skin where hair grows out and oil glands are located. Your genes mainly decide how big your pores naturally are, but several things can make them look bigger as you get older.

Too much oil production is the main reason pores get enlarged. Picture each pore like a tiny tunnel. When your skin makes more oil than usual, it has to squeeze through these small openings. This stretches the walls of the pore, kind of like how a balloon gets bigger when you blow air into it. Things like hormones changing, hot weather, or humid air can make your oil glands work harder and produce extra oil.

The problem gets worse when dead skin cells don't fall off your face like they should. Instead, they stick together with the oil and create thick plugs that clog up your pores. These plugs are like putting a cork in a bottle - they force the pore opening to get wider to fit all the buildup.

As you age, the skin around your pores gets weaker. Think of it like the elastic in old socks - it doesn't snap back into shape anymore. The proteins that keep your skin tight and bouncy (called collagen and elastin) start breaking down, so your pores can't shrink back to their normal size.

Sun damage makes this worse by destroying these important proteins and making your skin thicker. Also, if you get lots of pimples or scrub your face too hard, it can permanently damage your pore walls.
