What is Botox, Dysport, Nucieva and Other Neuromodulators?

Botox (and other neuromodulators) is a minimally invasive treatment designed to temporarily relax specific muscles with an extremely low dose of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Its primary use in aesthetic medicine is to smooth out dynamic wrinkles, which are those caused by repeated facial expressions like frowning or squinting. It's particularly effective for areas such as the forehead, crow's feet and between the eyebrows. In fact, Botox is now Health Canada-approved for the treatment of platysmal bands (necklines, aka "turkey neck") and jawline definition.

Botox is also effective in removing smoker's lines along the lips, softening an overly squared jawline and reducing the prominence of a gummy smile.

Botox provides results that typically last 3 to 6 months, allowing for flexibility and natural aging.

The Science

Understanding the science behind Botox requires a closer look at how our nerves communicate with muscles.

When a nerve sends a signal to a muscle, it does so by releasing a chemical messenger called acetylcholine.

Acetylcholine binds to receptors on the muscle cells, signaling them to contract.

Botox essentially breaks this communication, preventing muscles from receiving that signal to contract.

Without acetylcholine, the muscle remains relaxed, leading to softened wrinkles and smoother skin.

Is Botox Right for You?

Botox is ideal for adults aged 25 to 75 looking for preventive or corrective care, with a special nod to those noticing age-related changes like fine lines.

Ages 25-35: Prevention and Early Intervention

By starting treatments early, you can delay the onset of deeper lines and wrinkles.

Ages 35-50: Maintenance and Enhancement

Maintain the results achieved from earlier preventative treatments, and erase any new signs that develop.

Ages 50 and up: Rejuvenation + Restoration

Botox can significantly reduce the appearance of deeper wrinkles that have developed with age.

The Botox Treatment Process: A Step-by-Step Overview

At the heart of a safe Botox experience is precision and patient-centred care. Your treatment begins with a thorough consultation, where your concerns are discussed in a welcoming, non-rushed environment. A detailed discussion helps to identify emotional triggers from specific areas of concern. For example, if asymmetry is a concern, we'll use advanced facial mapping techniques to mark precise points on your face. This "measure twice, treat once" method ensures even distribution and minimizes risks like unintended brow changes.

We also focus on education to dispel common myths, such as the idea that Botox will make you look "frozen." In reality, when administered with care, it can enhance your natural features without altering your expressions dramatically.

You can expect your first Botox treatment to be about 45 minutes. This will be for the consultation and  treatment itself. After that, treatments generally take about 15-30 minutes.

Preparation + Safety Measures

Before any injections, your skin is cleaned thoroughly. Makeup is removed, followed by sterilization with alcohol swabs. For deeper treatments, chlorhexidine is used to reduce the risk of complications (such as granulomas, which are nodules that can form from the body's reaction to injections).

This step reflects our commitment to evidence-based practices, informed by medical research and anatomical training.

The Injection

We use a very fine needle to administer Botox: 31-gauge. The amount of Botox administered is calculated based on the severity of the concern and the area, while techniques are adjusted for your facial dynamics—such as varying muscle activity on each side. Because the needle is so fine and our administration techniques are so precise, are clients frequently tell us that any discomfort and pain is minimal, often rated as a 1 out of 10. (Numbing cream is available if needed.)

Our injection process is grounded in training from anatomical experts and world leaders in aesthetic medicine, ensuring injections are placed with millimetre-level accuracy. For instance, treatments always avoid areas like the superior orbital rim to prevent issues such as brow drop. It's a reminder that cosmetic procedures are as much about art as they are about science.

Aftercare + Results

Safety is paramount and we focus on preventing complications through precise techniques and follow-up care.

We will clean the area and may gently massage it for even product distribution. You'll receive a courtesy bag with items like an ice pack and anti-bruising products (such as La Roche-Posay's Cicaplast B5) to support healing. You might experience mild bruising or swelling, which can be managed by following the post-treatment instructions we'll give you.

Once you leave our facility, we'll keep in touch. A phone check-in is standard, with recommendations for a return visit in 2 weeks to assess results. Documentation, including photos, is handled ethically to protect your privacy and support ongoing care.

Botox's effects typically appear within a few days, peaking at two weeks. While about 10% - 20% of patients may need a touch-up, this is discussed transparently during your consultation to set realistic expectations.

Should you require a touch-up during your followup, it is free of charge (provided that our recommended dosing suggestions are followed.)
